John Christopher Martin

Chatham – John “Jack” Christopher Martin, 87, passed away peacefully Thursday night, February 29, 2024, after a lengthy illness. He was born in New Britain, CT to John Christopher and Florence Martin. After their early deaths, he was welcomed into the family of his aunt and uncle, Eleanor (Martin) and Matthew Callahan of Springfield, MA and his four cousins, Matt, Terry, Jim, and Jeanne. It was here he met and married his wife of 62 years, Ruth Dagenais Martin.

“Mr. Jack” is best known to the community for the time he spent working for the Town of Chatham as the gate attendant at the transfer station. Everyone was a friend to him. He treated all he met with kindness, generosity, humor, and respect. And he always had a treat for the pups that visited. When not making friends with his canine visitors, Mr. Jack liked to relax by reading, listening to jazz, and watching the Red Sox.

Jack is survived by his wife Ruth, his four sons John, Patrick, Timothy, and Brendan, his daughter-in-law Jeanne, and his three granddaughters, Meaghan and wife Katrina, Brenna, and Kendyll and husband Andrew.

Visitation will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Rd., Chatham, on Sunday March 17, 2024 from 12 Noon to 4:00 PM. A Masonic Service will be held during that time.
