Nancy Schreiner Hubley
5/07/1931 — 08/15/2024
On August 15, 2024, Nancy died peacefully at home following some ongoing health challenges. She was surrounded by family and friends. Nancy was born in Mt. Lebanon, PA to G. Reed Schreiner and Virginia Nancy Early. After graduating from high school, Nancy attended Bucknell University where she met her future husband, Reginald (Reg) Hubley. At Bucknell, Nancy was active in the theatre and was told by her professor that she was talented enough to try her skills on Broadway. However, upon graduating magna cum laude, Nancy and Reg married, moved to Cleveland, Ohio for Reg’s job with McGraw-Hill, and started a family.
After several years in Ohio, Reg’s promotion to the New York office brought the family to Summit, NJ, where Nancy became active at Christ Church. She was a long-term choir member, served as deacon, and eventually launched an inspirational, educational theatre program called the Illuminators at the church that remains active to this day. An experienced musician, Nancy played the piano and harp, and even briefly held a job as church organist. Nancy also dusted off her thespian skills, becoming a regular leading actress and director at the Summit, NJ Playhouse, and at the semi-professional Bickford Theater in Morristown, NJ. One of her favorite shows that she directed was the musical,“The 1940s Radio Hour” which she worked on with her daughter, Caroline, who was the set designer for that production.
Nancy was an avid gardener having raised vegetables and a wide variety of flowers. This talent she developed by helping her parents with their gardens when she was a child. She was a keen lover of nature, regarding the great outdoors as a perfect cathedral - enjoying mountains, forests, the sea and the open sky, and all of the creatures that we share the planet with. This passion, she shared with her family. Nancy took to painting nature scenes when living on Cape Cod, producing pictures of equal quality to well-known, local artists. She was also a published author.
Nancy was a loving devoted wife, mother and friend, always offering the best of herself to those whom she loved. A unique example of true grace, she is missed by all who survive her.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and a beloved daughter in-law, Maryellen Hubley. She is survived by her son, Brandon Hubley, of Harwich, MA, who lovingly cared for her in her last years of life. She is also survived by her daughter, Caroline Bucquet of Rockaway, NJ, and son-in-law, Jean Bucquet of Rockaway, NJ in addition to sister-in-law, Cathy Schreiner of Sequim, WA, nieces, nephews, and grand child.
A Celebration of Life is planned for November 12, 2024 at St. Christopher’s church in Chatham, Mass. Details to follow.
