BREWSTER -- Police are investigating after two drivers died in a two-vehicle accident on Main Street Thursday night.

First responders were called to Main Street near Crosby Lane just after 9:30 p.m.

"Upon arrival, responding personnel located two motor vehicles that had been involved in what appeared to be a head-on collision," a Brewster Police news release reads.  Both drivers were alone in their respective vehicles.

"One of the operators, a 24-year-old female from Brewster, was found to be deceased at the scene," the release reads. "The other operator, a 38-year-old male from Truro, was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries." The man did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police are not releasing the names of the involved "at this time out of respect for the families."

The crash caused a closure of Main Street for several hours while crash investigators pored over the scene. The Brewster Police Department is being assisted by state police and the Barnstable County Sheriff's office in the investigation. State highway officials and Orleans police assisted at the scene. Brewster firefighters were assisted by crews from surrounding towns.
