CHATHAM – The fish pier, 1 p.m. Sunday. That’s the place to be to greet Santa Claus as he arrives to kick off the town’s annual Christmas celebration.

Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, the annual event will feature Santa escorted to the pier aboard a Coast Guard rescue boat packed with elves (as well as Coast Guard and town officials) who will help the Jolly Elf hand out candy canes to waiting children. After chatting with the children, Santa will then climb aboard a fire engine for the trip to the community center, where he will hear kids’ Christmas wishes and hand out gifts.

The annual arrival of Santa heralds the start of the town’s holiday season. The Christmas by the Sea Stroll begins on Friday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. with Santa leading the annual light parade to Sears Park, where the town tree will be lit at 5:45 p.m. More events follow on Saturday including Breakfast with Santa, a screening of “Elf” at the Chatham Orpheum Theater, and Santa stationed in his workshop at the chamber of commerce information booth on Main Street.

Many merchants will hold open houses with raffles and refreshments throughout the weekend.
