Monomoy Finishes Second, Nauset Fifth At Golf State Championships

FOXBOROUGH – The Monomoy boys golf program has reached new heights.
The Sharks posted their best finish in the program’s history when they earned runner-up honors at Monday’s Division 3 state championship at Foxborough Country Club.
Sophomore Hank Brown carded a 7-over-par 79 to finish third, fellow sophomore Cameron Reeves and senior Jackson Rocco shot matching 12-over 89s, and senior Casey Huse posted a 92 toward the Sharks’ team total of 339 points.
Ayer Shirley (331) was the only team to record a lower score on its way to the school’s first golf state title.
“It’s a dream for these guys,” Monomoy coach John Anderson said of the second-place finish. “They dreamed high in the very beginning of the year, knowing we had six players that could shoot in the 70s. Over the past three weeks, they’ve been working tirelessly until dark every night playing.
“They played all weekend, and I think that made the difference.”
Reeves sat atop the leaderboard for much of the day, maintaining a below-par pace through his front nine before back-to-back bogies took him out of contention. While Anderson and the Sharks will have to fill the void of their six graduating seniors, Monday’s state final proved the team has plenty of talent that will return.
“The two sophomores played fantastic,” Anderson said. “Cam led the field for quite a long time, which is a tremendous amount of stress, and Hank was steady the whole way. It was amazing to be able to follow them.”
Brown was especially consistent. He finished with 11 pars, including a stretch in which he made par on eight out of nine holes between holes 7 and 15.
“My tee shots were very good, which set me up to have good approaches so I wasn’t having to worry about wasting a stroke on punching out,” said Brown, a Harwich resident.
Out in Pittsfield, Nauset finished fifth at the Division 2 state final after registering a team score of 316 at Berkshire Hills Country Club. Pope Francis (308) claimed the title, with Nashoba Westwood and Old Rochester shooting matching 310s to share runner-up honors in a three-way tie.
The Warriors were led by senior Jack Martin, who finished tied for 12th overall after carding a 4-over 76. Freshman Oliver Smith shot a 77, senior Jake Everson posted an 80, and junior Max St. Aubin shot an 83 toward the team’s total.
It was a special season for the Warriors, who celebrated longtime coach Brian Hicks’s 200th career victory during their undefeated 16-0 regular season.
“It’s been a blast,” said Martin, a Yarmouth resident, after the team qualified for state. “I couldn’t have asked for a better senior year. I’m proud of every single guy that played, and I couldn’t be prouder of being a Nauset Warrior.”
St. Aubin echoed Martin’s sentiments after the South sectional.
“Going into the season, we knew we were going to be a very good team,” said St. Aubin, a Brewster resident. “I think no matter where we end up, we’re going to always look back at this season and know that it was very special for everyone.”
