Laurie Hill

Laurie Ellen Hill was born on October 3, 1918, in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. She lived in Montclair, New Jersey, for most of her early years, graduating from Montclair High School and from Rutgers University four years later. In those four years she met and then married Dr. Arthur G. Hill. During his years in naval service, they moved to Texas and then to Seattle. When he was sent overseas during the war, she moved back to Montclair and moved in with her parents, Guy and Dora Young. When Art returned from the war, they opened an office in Montclair, where they lived until their retirement. During those years they had four children and would spend two week family vacations every summer on Cape Cod. In time, they bought a summer home in Falmouth, MA, where they enjoyed many summers. Then in the early 80’s, after a ten-year sabbatical from the Cape, they moved back and retired to Chatham.

After moving to Chatham, they joined the Eastward Ho! Country Club, where Laurie honed her golf game and made many new friends. Art practiced ophthalmology for two days a week while always keeping time for the two of them to play together. Art and Laurie loved to travel the country — north, south, east, and west — and life was good. Laurie also had exceptional expertise with flowers, which led her to join the Chatham Garden Club and to take charge of the Eastward Ho flower committee for a number of years; she also served in the same capacity for the First Congregational Church.

Strong-minded, full of spirit, and resilient throughout her 105 years, Laurie spent her last years at The Victorian and then at Liberty Commons, where she enjoyed excellent care from a wonderfully attentive and professional staff who referred to her as “one of our family.”

Laurie leaves behind four children — George, Betty Ann (with husband, Kerry), Bob (with wife, Marilyn), and Doug — five grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Quite a lineage and achievement for a long, long life.

Instead of flowers, for those wishing to make a donation in Laurie’s memory, please consider The First Congregational Church or Liberty Commons. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
