Chatham’s Chris Our Making A Mark In NASCAR Xfinity Series
From racing dune buggies on Chatham beaches as a child in the ‘70s to competing alongside racing’s biggest names in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Chris Our has always had a competitive spirit.
The Chatham native has seen his dream of owning a NASCAR team blossom into a reality, but simply competing isn’t enough for Our.
The Cape native is determined to finish in the top 12 to earn a spot in the playoffs, and his Our Motorsports team currently ranks 14th with 17 races remaining in the regular season.
“This year we’ve been able to run with the big money teams, which is not what we are,” Our said. “We’re very lucky to be running where we are. Everyone is like ‘What are you guys doing?’ It’s more about consistency and staying out of trouble.”
Although Our’s loved ones remain tied to the family business, Robert B. Our Construction, in Harwich, Chris has led the North Carolina-based racing team Our Motorsports since its inception in 2015.
He’s been receiving help from his daughter and co-owner Mary, who is based in North Carolina and helps oversee operations at the team’s Lexington, N.C. headquarters.
“It’s very nice and she loves it,” said Our. “It’s been eye-opening for her because it’s a very cutthroat sport. It’s probably one of the worst businesses I’ve ever been in. When you’re running good, people want to steal your help.”
Anthony Alfredo, a 24-year-old Connecticut native, has been controlling the wheel as Our Motorsports’ driver this season. The team has had numerous strong finishes, including a third-place finish at Talladega on April 20.
“We always run really good at Talladega,” Our said. “We probably had a shot to win, but we got tangled up with 10 or 15 laps to go. We had to pit and then go to the back and we worked our way back up. We probably could’ve won it if we had another lap, but we were right there.”
Now Our is shifting his attention to the playoff chase. Although his team has remained competitive with some of the top teams in racing, including Stewart-Haas Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and JR Motorsports, Our is determined to earn a top 12 finish and continue racing into the fall.
“We’re trying to keep the momentum going,” he said. “The top 12 go to the playoffs, and that’s what we’re trying to get in. It’s all about consistency and staying out of trouble. You have to finish every race.”
Local racing fans can be a part of the action. Our’s team’s chief sponsor is Dude Wipes, but he said the team is always looking for more advertising support and encouraged potential sponsors to reach out through a message on the Our Motorsports Facebook page.
“We have quite a few open races and we’re always looking for advertising help,” Our said.
