Stephen McCarthy

Stephen McCarthy passed away peacefully at home on June 3, 2024 after a short battle with colon cancer. He and his family would like to thank the nurses from Beacon/Amedisys Hospice, the caregivers from Northstar and his physician, Mita Gupta, for all of the compassionate care through these months.

Stephen McCarthy was born on September 14, 1959 to Agnes and Maurice McCarthy Sr. in Waterbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School which he loved so much. He went to Sacred Heart year round including summers spending “quality” time with his great friend, Reverend John Blanchfield.

Steve spent his career in the utility industry. He retired after 34 years at Northeast Utilities Gas Business. While he lived in Waterbury, he was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Monsignor Slocum Division, Elks Lodge 265, Washington Hill Club and The Hundred Club.

When he retired, Steve moved to Chatham with his soul mate Joanne Russo. His happiest times were out on the water with Joanne and his family. He loved spending time with friends at Christian’s, The Oyster, The Squire, CBI and Brax Landing. He loved his “to go” tickets from Barbara. He also enjoyed sitting on his “flag draped” porch with Joanne “people watching.” He had fun with his favorite pets…Bentley and Bugs.

His family owes him a debt of gratitude for taking great care of his mother (and REAL best friend) until her passing last year. It was a great run and he thanks all of his friends.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Joanne Russo. He also leaves his best friend and Sister Meg McCarthy (Craig Kappel) and his “fixer” brother, Maurice McCarthy Jr. (Jane). He leaves his nieces and nephews, Tracie, Patty and Christen and Rob, Dan and William.

He appreciated getting to know Pastor Joseph Marchio of the First Congregational Church who took time and great care with Steve and his family over the last six months.

Steve was a great patriot and loved God and Country. Donations can be made in his name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hyman Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.

Arrangements are being handled by Nickerson Funeral Home. Services will be private.
