Athlete Of The Week: Tamer Khalil
HARWICH – Tallying 100 career goals is a rare achievement for any high school athlete, though it’s even less common for a player to reach the milestone with plenty of time remaining in their career.
Monomoy junior Tamer Khalil recently notched his 100th career goal and has been a key contributor for the Sharks boys lacrosse team during its 5-0 start.
In the team’s last game, a 16-4 victory over Sturgis East, the attackman from Chatham finished with five goals and two assists to help Monomoy head into April vacation with a perfect record.
“It’s always great to contribute,” Khalil said. “I try to move the ball the best I can, but I’m really an off-ball player. If I see the opportunity to shoot, I will.”
Throughout the Sturgis win, Khalil demonstrated the ability to play off his teammates, especially fellow attackman and senior Joey McKeen.
“We’ve always had that connection,” Khalil said. “We just know when to move the ball to each other and do a good job of helping each other get around defensemen.”
Thursday’s outpour was hardly Khalil’s first breakout game of the season. In Monomoy’s season-opening 15-12 victory over Cape Cod Academy on April 2, Khalil led the way by scoring 10 goals.
“There’s not much to say about him,” Monomoy coach John Kent said. “He just works, works, works. We rely on him a lot.”
Although Khalil and the Sharks cruised through the first portion of their schedule, the junior expects the competition to ramp up when the schedule resumes following vacation.
“We have some tough teams coming up,” Khalil said. “Even though we’re undefeated, no matter how good [our opponents] are, we feel like they can beat us.”
