Region Braces For Significant Snow
The National Weather Service has hoisted a Winter Storm Warning for the Cape and Islands in advance of Sunday and Monday's potentially significant snowfall. the region is expected to receive between six and 12 inches of snow, with localized snowfall of over a foot.
While a period of sleet is possible during the storm, most of the snowfall will be light and fluffy, forecasters say. Because high winds are not forecast during the storm, the risk for widespread power outages is limited, experts say.
Late Friday Chatham announced that the community center would open as a personal care site on Monday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents will be able to warm up and recharge phones and other devices if needed. The site will not provide meals or overnight accommodations. If residents need to warm up or charge devices outside of those hours, the police department on George Ryder Road is open 24 hours daily.
The Chatham Town Offices, Center for Active Living and transfer station will open at noon on Monday due to the forecast storm. The closure may extend to the full day if conditions warrant. Officials plan to make that decision Sunday evening. Announcements will be made on the town's website and social media.
