HARWICH – Peter Piekarski was elected to the select board Tuesday in a special election to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Mary Anderson. He was the only candidate on the ballot.
The turnout was light, with 286 people casting ballots, just 2.44 percent of registered voters. Piekarski received 273 votes.
Leo Cakounes, who took out nomination papers to run for the position but did not file them, received six write-in votes. There were three additional write-in votes and four blanks. Piekarski will serve for 43 days before the term expires. He is the only candidate seeking a three-year term on the board in the annual election, scheduled for May 21.
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
