Pihcintu Girls’ Chorus Performs To Benefit BBT
BREWSTER – On Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m. the Brewster Baptist Church will host a free concert by Pihcintu Multinational Girls’ Chorus. This event is presented by Building a Bigger Table (BBT) and First Parish Brewster UU. Any donations made will support ongoing activities of BBT, part of the social justice wing of First Parish Brewster UU church.
BBT is a local non-profit which serves people moving to the Cape from other countries. BBT is currently helping a large group of over 100 people, primarily from Haiti, who are staying in a local hotel in Yarmouth, by facilitating their access to many needed services. Kevin Lowey, a member of the Outreach Committee of BBT, said members of the group would like the community to be aware of how BBT works, since the group is relatively new.
Lowey explained that BBT is a humanitarian community that supports asylum seekers, refugees and migrants.
“We are a committee of First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalists and welcome other community members to help as well,” Lowey said. “We believe in creating a welcoming community for those people who have been displaced from their homes due to persecution, human rights violations, armed conflict or other reasons.”
Pihcintu Multinational Girls’ Chorus is a Maine-based chorus founded in 2006. This unique chorus of young women from Cambodia, China, Congo, El Salvador, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Vietnam, British West Indies and Zambia, along with children whose families have been here for generations, have formed a powerful and permanent bond. Pihcintu Multinational Girls’ Chorus got involved through Lowey’s wife, Jane, who directs a local women’s choir, Common Voices.
“Jane had connected with the director of the Pihcintu Chorus,” Lowey said. “It was a natural fit for adult women who sing world music to connect with and support the young women of Pihcintu. As the world opened up to live music again, Con Fullam, Pihcintu’s director, reached out to Jane about coming to the Cape for a concert.”
Lowey said BBT has received support from not only First Parish Brewster members but other local churches and generous people in our community.
“Overall, it has been a really rewarding experience to help this lovely group of people new to Cape Cod,” Lowey said.
Members of BBT have done projects such as creating English as a Second Language classes, holding a winter clothes drive, hosting a social knitting class, setting up special class support for the children of displaced families who are attending local schools, organizing after school activity classes, taking people to medical appointments, helping with driving lessons and obtaining driver’s licenses, collecting needed suitcases and other items, and responding to many other support calls for a variety of reasons.
“We want the event to bring our local community together in the joy of music. These young women are very talented and we want a full house to experience their voices,” Lowey said. “We will continue to support our mission and have a fun night.”
The Brewster Baptist Church is located at 1848 Main St. Donations will be accepted. For more information about the Pihcintu Multinational Girls’ Chorus, visit www.pihcintu.org.
