Athlete of the Week: Jacob Parkington

NORTH EASTHAM – The Warriors didn’t find the back of the net many times during the more than 150 regulation minutes of soccer played throughout the Nauset Clash on Saturday — so when they did, it truly counted.

One of those two total scores came from the leg of sophomore Jacob Parkington, who later also put through a penalty kick as Nauset made a run to the finals of the annual preseason jamboree.

Parkington’s goal served as the decider against Silver Lake, a 1-0 win the Warriors needed in order to clinch a spot against Sharon in the day’s final match to determine an overall winner of the exhibition event.

Late in the first half of the mini-scrimmage versus the Lakers, Parkington received a throw into the box from senior Lucas Wilkinson and hammered a shot past multiple defenders.

“He was one of our better players last year, but he came through when we needed a goal,” Nauset head coach John McCully said.

His day wasn’t done after the big goal against Silver Lake. After a scoreless 40 minutes, the Warriors and Sharon went to penalty kicks in the Nauset Clash final.

Though Sharon eventually won 4-3, Parkington — as Nauset’s third kicker — scored a critical PK to keep pace with the Eagles. For his attempt, he stutter-stepped on the approach to the dot, then blasted a shot to the top right.

As a freshman, Parkington was already a key contributor on offense last year for the Warriors. After the Nauset Clash, it’s clear that’ll only continue this season.
