Towns To Mark 25th Anniversary Of Terror Attacks

It’s hard to imagine that it was 25 years ago next Friday that terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and crashed an airliner in Shanksville, Penn., claiming nearly 3,000 lives. Next week, first responders and others on the Lower Cape will pause to remember.

 In Brewster, Fire Chief Kevin Varley said the department will hold a small remembrance ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in front of the fire station at 1671 Main St. The public is encouraged to attend this brief observance, to be held at 10 a.m.

Chatham’s remembrance ceremony will happen at 9 a.m. at the fire station at 135 Depot Rd., near the town’s 9/11 Memorial, a preserved girder from the World Trade Center. Organizers are seeking to honor the memory of loved ones of Chatham community members lost on that day. People wishing to honor a friend, colleague or family member are asked to contact Deputy Emergency Management Director Mark Heller at 508-945-5191.

 In Harwich, the 9/11 observance will happen at 9:45 a.m. at the town’s 9/11 Memorial in front of the Robert A. Peterson Firehouse at 175 Sisson Rd. Firefighters and police officers will gather to honor the victims of the tragedy and reaffirm the promise never to forget. Light refreshments will follow.

 Firefighters and police in Orleans will be attending a 9/11 memorial event at Nauset Regional Middle School on Sept. 11 at 8:45 a.m. outside of the school. 

 At 7 p.m. on the evening of Sept. 11, the Chatham Band will be performing "An Evening of Remembrance and Comfort," an hour of peaceful, reflective music to honor those lost on 9/11. The event happens at the Chatham First United Methodist Church, 569 Main St., and a donation of money or nonperishable food will be accepted on behalf of the Family Pantry of Cape Cod.
