"I've been around for 37 years in Chatham," said Tony Guthrie, of the Guthrie Schofield Group. "Alfred is the young innovator who's helping recreate what this group can be.
Although their backgrounds are separated by a generation, partners Tony Guthrie and Alfred Schofield believe that difference is exactly what makes their business model successful
For nearly four decades, Tony Guthrie has been a familiar face in Chatham. After successful leadership roles at Chatham Bars Inn, Wequassett Resort and Golf Club and Wychmere Beach Club, Guthrie built a reputation for exceptional hospitality before transitioning into real estate. Today, as co-founder of the Guthrie Schofield Group at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Robert Paul Properties, he's applying those same principles of service while helping shape the future of the profession on the Lower Cape alongside business partner Alfred Schofield
A Barnstable native, Schofield watched his parents purchase and restore the historic West Barnstable Village Store when he was in middle school. Helping transform the once-neglected property sparked an appreciation for Cape Cod's historic architecture. Schofield attended Babson College where he co-founded the wellness company VitalFit. The plant-based supplement brand became the first of its kind to be carried nationally by Equinox fitness clubs before being acquired by TB12, Tom Brady's health and wellness company. When he decided to return home to Cape Cod, real estate felt like a natural fit.
"I always knew I was passionate about real estate," Schofield said. "Coming back home gave me the opportunity to combine that passion with everything I'd learned about entrepreneurship, marketing and growing a business.”
His partnership with Guthrie has blended decades of local relationships with a fresh approach to technology, branding and client engagement. But selling homes is only one part of the Guthrie Schofield Group's mission.
The partners have intentionally built a business model focused on mentoring young professionals entering an industry that can often be difficult to break into. Because real estate is commission-based, new agents frequently face financial barriers while building a client base. Guthrie and Schofield wanted to create a team structure that provides guidance, collaboration and opportunity instead of asking agents to navigate the business alone. Today, the group includes seven agents and an intern preparing to become licensed.
"We're proud of selling homes," Schofield said. "But seeing someone grow their career and build a life here on the Cape is just as exciting as any sale."
Schofield believes creating meaningful career opportunities helps strengthen the year-round community and allows younger generations to remain on Cape Cod.
The Guthrie Schofield Group also works with sellers to make strategic improvements before properties reach the market. From fresh paint to kitchen and bathroom updates, the team coordinates licensed contractors, oversees renovations and helps homeowners present their properties in the best possible light.
"People aren't coming here looking for a project," Schofield said. "They're buying their dream.
Community involvement forms yet another vital pillar of the business.
The team supports organizations including the Family Pantry of Cape Cod, Monomoy Community Services, the Animal Rescue League of Boston and ALS organizations. For Guthrie, giving back is a natural extension of lessons learned throughout his hospitality career.
"The places where I worked taught me the importance of respecting where we are," he said. "Being involved with the community and understanding the people who live here is what makes this place so special."
While Chatham's waterfront homes and picturesque landscape often capture attention, Schofield believes buyers are searching for something deeper.
"People come here looking for community," he said. "They're looking for belonging. In a world that's becoming increasingly digital, Cape Cod still offers authenticity and connection."
