The Monomoy girls basketball team was due for a breakout game.

After consecutive losses to Nauset and Mashpee, the Sharks visited Martha’s Vineyard and exploded for a big offensive night en route to a 53-30 victory over the Vineyarders.

Senior Susannah Brown led the way with a well-rounded effort, scoring 15 points to go with 13 rebounds and six steals. Brown’s classmate, AJ Gates, added 10 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Junior Jojo Ready posted a game-high 17 points with four made 3-pointers and six rebounds.

The Vineyarders were paced by Avery Mulvey’s 10 points in a losing effort.

With the win, Monomoy improved to 6-7 on the season with seven games remaining. The team is in the hunt to qualify for the Division 4 state tournament with a No. 44 ranking in the state, according to the MIAA Power Rankings released Jan. 26. The top 32 teams at season’s end automatically qualify for the tournament, with the teams ranked 33rd and below also qualifying with a .500 record or better.

Boys Punch Ticket

For the first time since 2020, the Monomoy boys basketball team is heading to the postseason.

The Sharks secured a spot in the Division 4 state tournament with a 53-49 victory at Mashpee on Jan. 24. The Sharks improved to 10-2 with the win, which clinched at least a .500 record for the squad, which was ranked 16th in the Jan. 26 power rankings.

Although the team suffered a 55-52 loss to Martha’s Vineyard on Friday, the Sharks can let out a sigh of relief after earning a postseason berth following back-to-back 4-16 seasons.
