Investigation Continues Following Fatal Accident

WEST CHATHAM – A regional crash reconstruction team is working to determine the cause of a fatal pedestrian accident that happened July 25.

Police received a 911 call about the accident, which happened just after 7:50 a.m. on Route 28 near the intersection of Woodpecker Valley Road. Upon investigation, they learned that a pedestrian, 81-year-old Janet Brennan of Chatham, had been struck by a white newspaper delivery van. The driver of the van, who has not been identified, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.

Rescuers rendered first aid at the scene until an ambulance arrived to shuttle the victim to a Boston MedFlight helicopter, which airlifted her to a Boston trauma center. Police report that Brennan later died.

While the driver of the van received a citation for hanging plastic bags from the van’s passenger side visor, Chatham Police Chief Lou Malzone said the final cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The crash is being investigated by the Chatham police and members of the Cape Cod Regional Crash Reconstruction Team, with support from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.

“It was a tragic accident and our thoughts are with all involved,” Malzone said.
