Minding Your Business- Brewster Conservation Trust
The Brewster Conservation Trust is a private nonprofit land trust established in 1983 by Brewster residents to protect from overdevelopment the landscapes, natural resources, wildlife habitat, and rural character that make up the heart of the community. BCT is governed by a board of trustees and is funded through membership, donations and grants.
BCT is celebrating over 40 years of conservation success, including protecting 1,700-plus acres of land and accepting 85 parcels of donated land. One of its main missions is to cultivate public interest and engagement with the natural world. The group’s mission and method go hand in hand: the mission is to preserve open space, natural resources, and the rural character of Brewster and to promote a conservation ethic. The method is to follow a strategic approach to acquiring land with high conservation value and diligently prioritizes natural resource stewardship and community outreach and education. BCT works collaboratively with other nonprofits and frequently partners with the town of Brewster to acquire and protect conservation land.
BCT grows much of its community awareness through business partnerships, local volunteer programs, and donations. The organization hosts a variety of walks, hikes and educational programming throughout the year which can be viewed on the website.
One of the most anticipated events of the year is coming up this weekend at the Sea Camps Bay Property at 3057 Route 6A. Brewster Conservation Day will take place on Saturday July 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is absolutely free to attend.
Jeanie Yaroch, the Brewster Conservation Trust Communications and Outreach Coordinator, is very excited for the weekend ahead. “The energy and atmosphere are great! A super positive event with activities for kids that are fun and educational,” she said.
Brewster Conservation Day is in its 15th year and will feature a day full of fun for the whole family. The theme for 2026 is Conservation Begins at Home, which will include tips and tools for the many ways we can all improve our conservation practices. The event will take place rain or shine.
Over 40 exhibitors will be on hand to celebrate the community’s natural resources and coastal habitat. Visitors will be able to engage in various interactive displays while learning about the importance of protecting valuable resources and practical ways to waste less and conserve more. There will be a children’s story time and creativity zone, as well as a puppet show by AmeriCorps Cape Cod members.
Highlights of this year’s celebration will also include presentations by APCC’s Erin Camire and Cape Light Compact’s Stephen McCloskey and a “Creativity Zone” with fun, hands-on, kid-friendly activities blending art, conservation, and community. Live musical performances by Paul Kehoe and the Drumma Queens will keep the crowd entertained, as will the day’s emcee, WOMR’s Braintree Jim. Food from Brewster Oysters, the BCD Hot Dog Stand and Kono Pizza food truck will be on hand at the event all day.
