‘We Did This’ : Nauset Seniors Celebrate Close Of High School Careers

NORTH EASTHAM  – Lilian Peck began her high school career listening to Olivia Rodrigo and ended it listening to Tool. But Nauset High’s 2026 valedictorian and her fellow graduates navigated through much more than changes in musical taste over the last four years.

High school by its nature is a period of growth, change and adjustment, but the Nauset Class of 2026 hardly needs to be told as much. For much of their four years, they navigated through the renovation of the high school campus in real time. They traded in standard classrooms for modular ones, and white-knuckled their way through noise, detours and other interruptions that come with a major construction project.

“But I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Peck said.

This year’s graduating class was celebrated during its June 5 commencement ceremony for its ability to rise above the challenges and adversity brought on by the $169 million campus renovation, which broke ground in 2023 and was largely completed at the start of the current school year.

“We did this,” Class President Caroline Brown said, noting that graduating from the “New Nauset” is just the “first of many new and exciting things” that she and her fellow graduates will accomplish.

Class salutatorian Hannah Chung spoke of the importance of community, including the one this year’s seniors built navigating through the campus renovation together. But she also spoke about the communities within the class that helped this year’s graduates grow through the course of their high school careers. That includes family members, friends, and in Chung’s case, the school band.

“Our communities change and influence us,” she said. “They show up for us. You look around right now and see that fact so clearly.”

For Peck, graduation came with the realization of her class’ unique standing in the annals of Nauset history. Theirs, she said, is the class bridging the high school’s storied past to its future. She recalled how math classes used to be housed in the old N building and art classes used to be in the C building.

“Now in a manner that isn’t confusing at all, it’s the exact opposite,” she said.

But Nauset School Superintendent Glenn Brand said those challenges only served to strengthen the Class of 2026. He said this year’s graduating class will be remembered for its “resilience, adaptability and growth,” qualities he said have well prepared outgoing seniors for what the future holds for them moving forward.

“In many ways, the story of your high school careers mirrors the story of life itself,” Brand said. “And trust me, this story will play itself out as you grow, as you age, and as you experience all that is to come ahead of you.”

In what has become a graduation tradition, Principal Patrick Clark once again celebrated the Class of 2026 in poetic fashion. He applauded this year’s stage production of “Mama Mia” and seniors’ accomplishments both in school and on the field, ice and court, and wished them well on their respective journeys.

“We’ll be hearing of your successes, each, every and all,” he said. “From the dorm, job or barracks that await you next fall.”
