Breakers Take A Scoreless Draw, Nauset Falls In Davis Cup Rematch On Cape Cod Soccer League Opening Night

NORTH EASTHAM – Cape Cod Soccer League’s Breakers FC opened their 2026 slate on the road Sunday evening. Except they were actually playing at their home field.
Due to a conflict preventing opponent Stable United FC from using their home pitch in Sandwich, Breakers found themselves kicking the summer off with an away match at the familiar confines of Nauset Regional High School’s turf field. For that reason, they were satisfied with battling to a scoreless draw to get on the board of the league’s seven-team table in their first match.
“Anytime you can get a point on the road is positive,” Breakers General Manager Tony Conte said.
Both sides had their chances. Stable United clanged one off the right post midway through the first half. Later on they had a ball sent into the box begging to be tapped in, but the delivery skipped across untouched.
For Breakers, an attempt by Kevon Campbell, also in the first half, was fisted away by Stable United’s goalkeeper. In the second, a direct free kick by Ethan Boyle rebounded off the crossbar, and a follow-up was saved impressively again by the keeper. Breakers goalkeeper Raldo Mowatt similarly made multiple saves in both halves.
“Sometimes it takes a few more matches to mesh, but absolutely very satisfied with getting a point,” Conte said.
Campbell finished with three shots and was a clear attack threat as a big target with speed. In possession, he could hold up while wingers like Spencer Rushnak and Anthony Lovati joined the rush.
“It's a joy to coach them,” Conte said.
The roster for Breakers includes multiple players (Rushnak, Lovati, Boyle, Sebastian Headrick) from Nauset’s 23-0 state championship squad in 2018.
On opening night, the team debuted brand new kits purchased by the Beachcomber in Wellfleet. The bright pink jerseys are fronted with the logo created by Wellfleet artist Andrew Jacob that the club has been using for 16 years.
Breakers went 5-7-2 last season, placing sixth in the standings. They were defeated by Upper Cape United 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup playoffs. They’ll look to improve on that finish within the league table and get past the first round this year.
“It'd be nice to go in the top three and get out of the first round this year,” Conte said. “That would be our goal at least. Get to a semifinal and then see what happens.”
Nauset Storm Falls in Championship Rematch
Nauset Storm defeated AC Independence three times last summer. That included twice in the regular season en route to topping the league table for the third consecutive year. The third was the 2025 Davis Cup championship, a 1-0 penalty shootout win.
But on opening night Sunday, the result finally flipped. The two clubs jostled through a first half marked by a thick and misty rain. Then, a foul put AC Independence with a free kick deep in Nauset’s side. Gleison Reis stepped into a screamer, and the 75th minute score was enough for the 1-0 AC Independence win.
“We missed some great opportunities,” Nauset manager John McCully said. “I mean, certainly we were much better than them in the second half, but we got nothing for it.”
Nauset was missing their top scorer, according to McCully. The majority of the roster comprises college players looking to continue to develop their game.
Not only did Nauset outlast AC Independence in last year’s Davis Cup title match, they also squeaked by with just one more point to win the league table. The expectation is that both clubs will be right there with each other again.
A couple days prior to the season’s start, Nauset took down Breakers 6-0 in a friendly. That made the damp chill of a scoreless first match even more frustrating.
“I think that's the most disappointing thing tonight, is we got shut out and we weren't as dangerous as we need to be in this league, but we'll be fine in the end,” McCully said.
