Terry’s Appliances Closure Has Customers Steaming
EAST HARWICH – The sudden closure of Terry’s TV and Appliances store has caught a number of people by surprise, including some who paid for products and have not received them. While the store’s telephone message says the closure was due to medical reasons, public information indicates that Terry’s owner owes the state thousands in back taxes.
The appliance store has been operating at 181 Route 137 in the commercial zone in East Harwich for many years. While comments on social media praise the service of the company, other comments disparage it.
But the doors have been closed since May 15 and the darkness within has people who have paid for appliances wondering whether they will get their orders or a refund of their money. There is no explanation for the closure on the storefront.
However, a message at the business’ telephone number says that the store was closed permanently “due to serious medical issues.”
“It is not the outcome we wanted or planned for and we deeply regret the disruption and inconvenience it has caused our customers,” the message says.
The owner of the appliance store is listed as Zachariah Terry and the business has been in operation since 1987.
Several comments on social media assert that the closure is related to financial issues. According to the state Department of Revenue portal, Zachariah Terry of Harwich owes the commonwealth $170,861 in back taxes. Terry’s home on 4 Skipper Shea Ln. is listed for sale for $1,549,000.
Efforts to reach out to Terry for comment on the closure were unsuccessful. The owner of the plaza where the store was located also could not be reached for comment on the future of the space.
Several customers have reached out on social media hoping to learn more about the status of the business, citing payments made for products, such as stoves and refrigerators, that were not delivered. Customers are wondering whether they will get their money refunded.
One woman on social media said if payment was made with a credit card, a claim can be filed with the card company. She wrote that she was going through that process now.
The appliance store is not Better Business Bureau accredited.
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
