PLEASANT LAKE – Hardly a moment had passed from the opening draw between Cape Cod Tech and Bristol Plymouth last Monday and senior Brooke Smith had already sent a ball to the back of the opposing net.
That quick score by Smith, which put the Crusaders ahead just seconds into the game, was her first of five goals on the day. The girls lacrosse team went on to fall to Bristol Plymouth 19-11, but Smith was a constant threat on offense all afternoon.
“It's hard transitioning the ball, but once we get it down there, we can score,” Smith said.
Smith has played lacrosse for five years, starting in eighth grade at Barnstable. She was a member of Cape Tech girls lacrosse’s inaugural season as an official varsity program last year. They notched their first-ever victory that season, and this season, with Smith now acting as a captain, they’ll seek to add more.
“She’s a true team leader all around,” head coach Darin Jacks said. “She’ll help anybody.”
Smith said her philosophy as a captain is “just to help the team grow and work better together,” key for a group kicking off their second varsity season this spring.
“Kind of just helping build the team up to a stronger varsity level,” she said. “Kind of just helping each girl individually and putting it all together as a team.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
