Robert Emmett Long
March 11, 2026
Robert Emmett “Bob” Long, Jr., 87, died on Monday, February 23, in the care of loving family. Born on September 15, 1938, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Bob was the second of what would be four children born to Robert Emmett Long, Sr. and Natalie (Leonard) Long. The family lived at 1043 Dewey Place with grandmother Leonard (Carroll) and Aunt Jeanne, down the street from Aunts Pansy and Hester (Carroll) and across from that ever-tempting opportunity for adventure, the Pennsylvania Railroad, which offered Bob and friends a wide range of broadening experiences.
After the family moved to Westminster Avenue, Elizabeth, Bob attended the Pingry School, describing it as one of the most important formative experiences of his life. Graduating from Babson Business College in 1959, Bob joined both the Army Reserves and the family business, Travelong, which ultimately came to include his brother, Walter, and brother-in-law, Ed Ehlert. Bob was proud of his work expanding and bringing the business into the computer age, also chairing the Hickory Travel Association during this period.
Bob married the former Lisa Blauvelt in 1962. The couple had two children, Robert Emmett “Corky” Long III, and Britt Long, before divorcing in 1981.
A member of the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ from 1965 until his passing, Bob, was proud of a drive often in excess of 300 yards and pleased to be the only member of his era, to his knowledge, to get on the green in two on the par fives on both courses.
The travel business allowed Bob to continue to pursue his life-long goal of adventure, fresh- and saltwater fly fishing in Chile, New Zealand, the Himalayas and the American West, where Bob fished with both of his children. After retirement, Bob resided at 14 Champlain Road in Chatham, Massachusetts, where he fished the Monomoy rips and flats in the morning and sailed surrounding waters in the afternoon, also wintering and golfing at Harbor Ridge Yacht and Country Club in Palm City, Florida for more than 20 years. Bob was grateful for all of those opportunities and experiences.
Predeceased by his parents, sister Pat and brother Walter, Bob is survived by children Corky and Britt Long, second wife, the former Angela Gruen, sister Jeanne Ostrow, sister-in-law Cathy Long, grandchildren Robert, Joseph and Stephanie Long, nieces Alison (Jeff) Wark, Heidi Mazzoco, Judy Doyle, Alex (Ron) and Katherine Ostrow, nephews Walter (Val) and Chris (Yuki) Long and many great-nieces and -nephews.
At Bob’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Friends of the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, 791 Main Street Chatham, MA 02633.
