ORLEANS – More than 200 people participated Saturday in the annual Santa Stampede 5K, hosted by the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.
With Christmas music playing on repeat by the start and finish line positioned at The Barley Neck restaurant, runners and walkers and stroller-pushers traveled to Nauset Beach and back.
Most stampeders dressed the festive part. There were Santas, elves, reindeer and other Christmas-related costumes and outfits.

Before the official 5K, a kids’ race was held for the event’s younger participants. The race serves as a community event to get people out for the holidays, according to Judy Lindahl, executive director of the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.

“It just seems to be an event that everyone’s warmed up to,” Lindahl said.

For the second consecutive year, Matt Ward, 30, of Weymouth finished first overall. He ran the course in 17:06.5, followed by Brent Schouler, 33, of Mashpee (17:18.6); Michael Suazo, 35, of Harwich (17:49.1); Valdi Fernandes, 45, of South Dennis (18:52.7); and John Skarupa, 45, of Chatham (19:14.6).

Miranda Kielpinski, 35, of Harwich was the race’s first female finisher with a time of 19:50.5. She was followed by Isabella Haley, 21, of Hyannis (22:48.4); Angelica Moraes, 39, of Hyannis (25:16.4); Jill Rembetski, 56, of Averill Park (26:38.2); and Jenn Levatino, 49, of Cambridge (26:29.9).
