Athlete Of The Week: Tre Broussard

SOUTH YARMOUTH – In a Cape League All-Star game that featured seven home runs, Tre Broussard didn’t have to leave the yard to produce the most impactful performance in the East’s 13-8 win over the West last Saturday.
A Harwich Mariner from the University of Houston, Broussard went three for three with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored as a starter in center field for the East. Despite several All-Stars launching the ball beyond the fence at Red Wilson Field, Broussard’s five total bases led all players. He earned most valuable player of the East team.
“I think it’s more about the moment and the opportunity you get to showcase and represent the team, so it’s a great moment and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” he said.
Broussard’s three hits, in three consecutive innings, were the most of any player. He led off the bottom of the second with a double, then came around to score on a sacrifice fly. In the third, he hit a two-RBI single, part of a six-run inning for the East. Broussard doubled again in the fourth.
“Really neat kid,” Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and East All-Stars manager Scott Pickler said. “He’s had a good year. He plays hard. It’s fun to see.”
Broussard’s mother and father, Petual and Charles, traveled to the Cape from Houston for the game. Petual has seen her son do amazing things on the baseball diamond for most of his life, but even she was caught off-guard at the All-Star game. Words couldn’t explain it, she said.
“It was just amazing to be here and see it, and for him to achieve that MVP status was just amazing,” Petual said.
One game into the post-All-Star section of the Cape League season, Broussard was hitting .296 with a .363 on-base percentage and .324 slugging percentage. He’d stolen 10 bases and only been caught once, as of Tuesday.
“He’s a grinder,” Petual said. “He loves to display his speed, and he’s a hard worker. He’s very athletic, and he likes to really perform.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
