Nauset Boys Lacrosse Scores 20 In Tournament Opener Win
NORTH EASTHAM – Nine first quarter goals powered the Nauset boys lacrosse team in a dominating start Monday to their run in the Division 3 state tournament.
The 14-4 No. 2 seed Warriors defeated No. 34 seed Montachusett 20-6 in the first round matchup. The 20 goals in the playoff opener were the most Nauset has scored in a game this year.
Head coach Jesse Peno said he told the team the win was the “first step towards the road we want to go.”
Not three minutes of game time had elapsed before Nauset led 5-0 behind goals from junior Oscar Escher and senior Sawyer McCutchen. The Warriors led 19-5 after the third quarter.

Peno said Nauset has to “continue to jump out early.”
“If we jump out and get a few goals and have teams try to play catch-up, I think that works in our favor, so we’ve got to try to carry that forward, no matter who we’re playing,” he said. “It’s not always going to be like that, but no matter who we’re playing, we always want to score first and try to get the foot on the gas pedal and make teams chase.”
Eleven different players scored amid a 53-shot onslaught put up by the Warriors. Escher and McCutchen led the way with four goals each. Senior Logan Poulin, junior Jake Eldredge and senior Jake Everson each scored twice. Freshman Jack Peno, senior Andrew Bohannon, senior Michael Flynn, senior Fin Mayhew, sophomore Sean Sheehan and sophomore Blake Silvestri all scored once.
Peno said the Warriors “try to share the ball as best we can.”
“When we do that, we’re at our best,” he said.
McCutchen scored all four of his goals in the first quarter, among nine total for the team. He said Nauset was “picking matchups” and has a “great transition game.”
“When we have the defense get the ball back for us, it’s going into the net most of the time,” McCutchen said.
Nauset last year lost to eventual Division 3 champion Medfield in the state tournament semifinals. Medfield is again the first overall seed this season and looms on the other side of the bracket. In the quest to perhaps seek a rematch, the Warriors next play visiting No. 15 seed Hanover Thursday, June 5.
“We try to tell these guys, let’s earn the right to play at least three games at home,” Peno said.
