BREWSTER – Whitecaps fans have something new to cheer about this year before the season even starts.
Luke Dillon, president of the Brewster Whitecaps, announced the addition of a new team mascot at the select board’s May 12 meeting. Cappy, a lifesize Whitecaps player with a baseball head and waves for hair, was created by team management and named by the community.
“We held a naming contest online and in the schools,” said Dillon. “There were four winners that came up with Cappy, one of which was a student at Stony Brook. Some of the entries were hilarious.”
According to Dillon, this is the first mascot to join a Cape Cod Baseball League franchise.
Dillon said the team is planning a day in the not too distant future where Cappy will visit all the Brewster schools so students can get a first look before the season starts on June 14.
Every season, Whitecaps players participate in youth clinics Monday through Friday where they work with kids ages 5 to 14 or advanced players of any age, including a free one-day clinic. Scholarships are still available to cover the cost of the clinic. Dillon said they are planning to invite the kids up for the National Anthem on game days.
Field maintenance was completed during school vacation week last month. Town Administrator Peter Lombardi and Assistant Administrator Donna Kalinick arranged for the department of public works to assist in cleaning up the field. Captains Golf Course maintenance crews aerated the grass and landscapers will be onsite to mow the field before opening day.
A new set of stands was relocated to the outfield behind left center field for fans and viewers to watch.
The picnic area, located next to the right field line, has been updated with new all-purpose picnic tables and landscaping. The area is used by the players and interns for meals after the games. After the season and once the school year starts, Dillon said the area can be used by students and teachers.
Banners will also be added to the field to commemorate some of the players who have made it to the major leagues.
The season runs from June 14 through early August. A complete schedule can be found online at capecodleague.com/brewster. Schedules will also be posted at six local beaches around town.
