ORLEANS – Spring has sprung, and the Orleans Chamber of Commerce is ready to celebrate.

The chamber will host its first Cherry Blossom Festival May 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Village Green next to Snow Library. The event will feature 24 local vendors, food trucks, beer and wine from Hog Island Beer Co. and Truro Vineyards and live music and DJs courtesy of WOMR.

The spring festival comes on the heels of October’s Outermost Friday event, which similarly gathered together vendors and bands on the green ahead of last year’s Outermost Roots and Blues Festival at Nauset Beach. The success of the fall event set the stage for the chamber to host the May 10 festivities, according to chamber Executive Director Judy Lindahl.

“The number one feedback (from Outermost Friday) was, ‘You need to do this in the spring, too,’” she said. “We immediately looked at Mother’s Day weekend, and not more than a month after Outermost Friday we had it all in place.”

The chamber has added a few new elements to the Cherry Blossom Festival, including a family tent for kids that will feature face painting, arts and crafts and other events.

“We’ve added a couple of things to make it a little bigger, a little better draw,” Lindahl said.

The chamber is once again partnering with WOMR, which will bring local bands Slant Four and Sugar Bucket to the stage. DJ Matty Dread and Orleans resident Jim Freeman will also be on hand to DJ the event.

Lindahl said she hopes that nearby shops and restaurants will also benefit from the foot traffic that the festival is expected to bring in.

“The library is actually having an event inside the same day as the Cherry Blossom Festival,” she said. “It’s just a great fit.”

Bringing events such as the Outermost and Cherry Blossom festivals to town was a goal from the beginning for Lindhal, who is finishing her second year as executive director after having previously served on the chamber’s board of directors.

“We have great plans for the future,” she said. “The town of Orleans, the chamber of commerce, the merchants, everyone is working together, and it’s nice to see.”

The free festival will be held rain or shine. Donations to the chamber will be accepted, Lindahl said.

“It’s Mother’s Day weekend,” she said. “There’s a lot of people coming down to see their moms. It’s just going to be a great family event.”
