A Grand Night For Rodgers And Hammerstein At Eventide

by Melissa De La Vega

With the daffodils blooming around town and the smell of spring in the air, a glorious production of some of the most beloved Broadway tunes descended on the Eventide Theatre Company last week. It was a magnificent night for relishing in the music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein with the opening of “A Grand Night for Singing.”
The show is a musical revue highlighting over two dozen songs from various celebrated Rodgers and Hammerstein productions, both popular and not so widely known. “A Grand Night for Singing” was the brainchild of Walter Bobbie and originally ran on Broadway in the mid-1990s, earning two Tony nominations, including Best Musical. The short but mighty run at Eventide is directed by Donna Wresinski and Teri Shea with musical direction from Pam Wannie and choreography by Teri Shea.
“A Grand Night for Singing” is a fast-paced and super fun reimagining of some of the best Rodgers and Hammerstein songs from such popular musicals like, “Oklahoma!,” South Pacific,” “The King and I,” “Carousel,” “The Sound of Music” and many more. Some songs are blended together with remarkably smooth transitions and a few unexpected twists, making this a wonderfully refreshed take on classic tunes. If you’re a fan of musicals of any kind, this show is for you!
The show’s company is a real who’s who of talent from across the Cape and includes: Bethany Ambrose, Rachel Hischak, Beau Jackett, Eric Johnson, Kathleen Larson Day, Jane Loutzenhiser, Kaleigh Mason, Kim Matthews, Christian McCarthy, Maeve Moriarty, Meg Morris, Rebecca Riley, Zack Wannie, Bridget Williams and Dan Zajac.
Beau Jackett shines in a fantastic take on “Maria” from “The Sound of Music” (and no, he is not playing a nun!) as does Rebecca Riley in her twangy sassy take on the song “I Cain’t Say No” from “Oklahoma!” Kim Matthews wows in her delivery of  “A Wonderful Guy” from “South Pacific” and Dan Zajac will leave you with chills as he delivers the stunning ballad “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” from “Oklahoma!” To close out Act I, the entire company wows with “Some Enchanted Evening” from “South Pacific,” and then the audience is treated to some fun surprises during the intermission.
Theater-goers are in for 90 minutes of joy and laughter with “A Grand Night for Singing.” Be sure to score tickets to the last few performances — you will not be disappointed!
