Postseason Awaits Nauset-Monomoy Girls Hockey, Cape Tech Basketball And DY/CCT/CCA Hockey Team
Nauset-Monomoy girls hockey coach Zach Wells wanted to give the Warriors one final tune-up before the Division 2 state tournament began. He had no idea that it would come against the team’s first-round opponent.
As luck would have it, Wells scheduled a scrimmage against Norwood on Saturday. Three days later, No. 14 Nauset-Monomoy (9-9-1) and No. 19 Norwood (10-9-1) will meet in an opening-round game Tuesday at Charles Moore Arena, after The Chronicle’s deadline.
“It’s kind of my typical playoff luck,” Wells said of the scrimmage. “A couple years ago, we scheduled Reading and played them two games in a row, then last year it was Sandwich and D-Y.
“The brackets came out around 10 a.m. and we scrimmaged at 3 p.m., so by that time it was too late.”
The scrimmage provided the Warriors with an opportunity to refine their skills at game speed after closing out the regular season with a 4-2 loss at Sandwich on Feb. 12.
After making the program’s first state quarterfinals appearance a year ago, Wells is hopeful the Warriors will capitalize on the energy inside Charles Moore Arena on Tuesday night and begin their postseason quest with a victory.
“The girls love playing at home,” he said. “The energy is very high and it’s a hard place to come play in the playoffs. It gets really crowded and it’s loud, so it’s not an easy place for teams to play.”
Cape Tech Basketball
Both Cape Cod Tech basketball teams kick off their postseasons with Division 5 preliminary-round matchups on Tuesday night after The Chronicle’s deadline.
The Crusaders boys (11-9) enter the postseason as the No. 44 seed on the road at No. 21 Holbrook (10-10) at 6 p.m., while the 32nd-seeded girls squad (10-10) will host No. 33 Smith Academy (13-7) at 4 p.m.
DY/CCT/CCA Boys Hockey
After a 6-15 regular season, the Dennis-Yarmouth/Cape Cod Tech/Cape Cod Academy boys hockey team is heading back to the Division 4 state tournament.
The 31st-seeded Dolphins open their postseason with a preliminary-round matchup against No. 34 Taconic (8-6-2) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tony Kent Arena.
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
