SOUTH DENNIS – Owen Cloney was in the right spot at the right time, and that made all the difference.
The Monomoy sophomore from Harwich put home a rebound with 1:17 remaining in overtime to propel the Monomoy-Mashpee boys hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Quincy on Saturday at Tony Kent Arena.
It was the second goal of the game for Cloney, who trailed Monomoy junior Luke Raftery down the ice to the goalmouth after Raftery blocked a shot in the defensive zone that led to a rush for the Sharks (9-7-0).
When Quincy junior goaltender Brayden O’Connell stopped Raftery’s initial shot, Cloney was there to bury the rebound and seal the win.
“It felt great,” Cloney said. “[Raftery] stepped up and blocked a shot and made a good move and we were off to the races. I was telling him, ‘Go! Go! Go!’ The goalie made a good save, and I was there for the rebound and put it away.”
Cloney also scored to give Monomoy-Mashpee a 2-1 lead with 5:51 remaining in the second period. Quincy built a 3-2 advantage following a pair of power-play goals late in the middle frame, but Cloney and the Sharks rallied to earn the win and move just one victory away from clinching a Division 4 state tournament berth.
“It means a lot,” Cloney said. “Right now, this is one of the best years we’ve had in this program. It means a lot to the seniors on senior night. I’m excited — I really want to make the playoffs.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
