HARWICH – It’s not often that underclassmen are counted on to play pivotal roles to help lead varsity programs.
Cape Cod Tech sophomore Anthony Bartlett has handled the responsibility of starting at point guard with poise and confidence, establishing himself as a key player for the Crusaders (8-6).
“At the beginning of the season, everybody had high expectations for me as a player,” said Bartlett, a Yarmouth resident. “It was really getting out of my own head and really taking up the role as the point guard and the leader on this team. I know that’s what I can be.”
Bartlett helped lead Cape Tech to a lopsided 69-39 victory over Norfolk Aggie on Thursday in Harwich after not only helping to anchor the team’s full-court press defense but also scoring a team-high 14 points, including 10 during the second quarter.
First-year coach Kevin Furey said the sophomore’s development has included the ability to remain cool under pressure while also helping to lead the Crusaders through adversity.
“The confidence is part of it, but I think a lot of it is maturity and composure throughout the flow of the game,” Furey said. “They’ll be runs by both teams and he’s really gotten past the point of getting frustrated with something that’s not going well, to trying to keep the team together and get us back on track.”
