SOUTH DENNIS – As much as he prides himself on being a steady and reliable defenseman, Cape Cod Tech senior Max Hulten wants to be a complete player.
On Saturday, when the Dennis-Yarmouth/Cape Tech/Cape Cod Academy co-op team hosted undefeated Bishop Stang, Hulten showcased his versatility and scoring touch.
The senior from Yarmouth Port scored off a wrist shot from the blue line to give the Dolphins an early lead just 23 seconds into the game, then added a game-tying goal that evened the score 2-2 in the final minute of regulation.
Hulten’s Cape Tech classmate Tanner Chicoine went on to score in overtime to lift the Dolphins to a 3-2 overtime win over Stang.
“It seems like we were the underdogs in this situation and we just showed we’re not the team everyone thinks we are,” said Hulten.
While DY/CCT/CCA coach Lew Alberti was quick to praise Hulten for the impact he has made over the past three years, he noted Saturday’s performance may have been the senior defenseman’s best yet.
“Today was probably one of the best moments of his career,” Alberti said. “From the first period on, he was just in it and engaged. He took that big hit in the second period that we thought might knock him out of the game because he’s already a little banged up, but he came right back.
“It’s huge to have him out there to push the offense and also be solid on the blue line.”
Hulten said it felt “amazing” to make an impact at both ends of the ice.
“It’s definitely important to have a solid defensive game, but you also have to put some goals on the board,” he said. “It helps out a lot, so that felt amazing.”
