A Year of Minding Your Business Columns Part 2
From B’s Trees the first week of the year to Bass River Optometics in last week’s issue, each week this year I wrote about one of our advertisers. And I learned, as I do every year, that everyone has a story. Everyone has something interesting to say about their journey to a successful small business. Our corner of Cape Cod — the towns of Brewster, Chatham, Harwich, and Orleans — has a wealth of retail shops, restaurants, bakeries, professionals, realtors, tradespeople, galleries, antique centers, consignment shops, retirement homes, doctor offices, and more!

Need help with something? Check out our services advertisers. I was able to speak to quite a few of them this year, and they all serve our four towns. Robb Morrison, owner of Morrison Tree Service, is a certified arborist who cuts down trees but also prunes and maintains them. Brendan Donahue always loved climbing trees. Now he does it for a living and owns B’s Trees. Donahue removes trees but will always try to save them first. “Conserving trees is always a better option if possible,” he says.
Mr. Grab Bar, or Noah Thatcher, is a 13th-generation Cape Codder who saw a need for grab bar installations after his wife (in the healthcare industry) heard firsthand from patients rehabbing at home following a hospital stay that they needed grab bars.
Jim Cordeiro, owner/operator of Sea Breeze Softwash, uses biodegradable and eco-friendly solutions to gently power wash your house, walkways, decks and more.
Peter Hopple of T.W. Nickerson does so much: along with supplying landscapers and homeowners with mulch, compost, and stone, he offers excavating (lot clearing, driveways, dredging, demolition, etc.), delivery (one flat fee), and sewer connections. Tony Pagliaro of Anthony Pagliaro & Sons has been a mason for decades, and told me he enjoys admiring the chimneys around town he built 30 years ago. John Cardarella and his partner Matthew West are The Fence Guys, and they’re ready, willing and able to make your fencing project come true.
“To be honest with you, stormy weather is our best marketing tool,” Sharon Brown of RCA Electric & Generators said with a laugh. “The phone rings like crazy after a storm.” She can answer any questions you have about generators. Dan Hall of CPU Computers has been working on and with computers for 20 or more years. “I work on both Macs and PCs,” said Hall. You can purchase a computer through him or buy one yourself and call him for help getting it set up.
Looking for spiritual guidance? The message of inclusivity is evident in all the programs the Center for Spiritual Journey has created or is involved in. “We are all in this together,” said Dawn Tolley of the Center, the new name of Pilgrim’s Landing in Chatham. I also spoke with Rev. Chris McMahon of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House of Chatham, who invites you to “search with them.” A boat ride can be a spiritual experience, too. And Capt. Len Greiner of Harwich’s Cape Cod Harbor Cruises will help you find tranquility on a ride out of Saqutucket Harbor.
Cape Cod realtors are everywhere, and I got to interview some of the cream of the crop. The Guthrie Schofield Group of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices/Robert Paul Properties gives back to the community, along with expert advice for home buyers and sellers. LuxRECapeCod’s Brian Pothier and Matt Leonard with Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty told me about the value of staging. Thom Schoepfer of Keller Williams Realty gave me a history lesson in real estate on Cape Cod. He’s been in the business for a long time.
The Lower Cape offers both comfort and medical aid for senior citizens. North Chatham’s Broad Reach Healthcare Rehabilitation, Assisted Living, Long-term Care and Hospice Care is a campus filled with healthcare options. The Woodlands in Brewster is an assisted living facility under new ownership and has much to offer. And don’t forget about your eyes! The windows of your soul and “the windows into your body; they can tell you so much about your health," Paige Bauer told me at Bass River Optometrics.
I enjoyed chatting with all these business people over the year and am excited to do more interviews in 2025! Happy New Year!
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
