Hugh G. Moulton, 91, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024 at The Hill at Whitemarsh in Lafayette Hill, PA, where he had lived for 17 years, 16 with his beloved wife Katie, who passed away in 2023.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Hugh graduated from Wellesley High School and Amherst College, where 71 years ago he met his future wife Katie, then a student at Mount Holyoke College. He is survived by son Geoff (Lisa), daughter Cindy (Hal) Bassett, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
After graduating from Yale Law School in 1958, Hugh moved to suburban Philadelphia with Katie, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Hugh enjoyed a long and highly successful career as a lawyer and business executive. He began as an associate and later became a partner at Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads. He finished his career as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Alco Standard Corp. and then Unisource Corp.
Throughout his life, Hugh was committed to giving back to his community. He served on multiple non-profit boards, focusing chiefly on education and the preservation and enjoyment of open space. One of his proudest achievements in retirement was the formation and leadership of the Whitemarsh Foundation, spearheading the preservation of 450 acres of iconic open space in Whitemarsh Township, Pennsylvania.
The quintessential lifelong learner, Hugh had a deep passion for travel, education, and environmental conservation. Inspired by his early childhood summers in Chatham on Cape Cod, he instilled in his family a profound love for the ocean and its natural beauty. In their later years, Hugh and Katie traveled extensively, including 25 voyages on small ships to destinations including Antarctica in 1993 and the Northwest Passage in 2015.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Hugh’s life on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 1 to 3 pm, at Sunnybrook Golf Club, 398 Stenton Avenue, Plymouth Meeting, PA. Gifts in Hugh’s memory may be made to the Chatham Conservation Foundation, 540 Main St, Chatham, MA 02633.
