CHATHAM – Karla Steele has her eyes on beginning 2025 with a marathon.
On Sunday, the 47-year-old from Bourne saw how much her hard work is paying off.
Steele led the field of approximately 125 women to capture first place among women after finishing the Chatham in the Fall 10K in 45 minutes, 34 seconds.
“It’s very special,” said Steele, whose husband, Tom, finished first overall in 36:42.2.
“You’ve got to put in the work. It pays off, it always does.”
After finishing last year’s race in 46:11 to claim third place among female finishers, Steele said she was able to improve on her time due to the increased training she has put in to prepare for a marathon in early 2025.
“I did six miles before this race today, and then I’m going to run between four and six miles afterwards,” she said. “So, today is going to be my long run.”
Despite the course’s hilly terrain, Steele noted it was a beautiful course that showcased the best of Chatham’s picturesque charm.
“It’s a beautiful course,” Steele said. “Even though there are a lot of hills, I’ll take the hills any time because the scenery and the water are just beautiful.”
