Santa Arrives At Fish Pier Sunday

by Tim Wood

CHATHAM – The holiday season is here, and to help usher it in, Santa Claus will arrive at the Chatham Fish Pier this Sunday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m.
The Jolly Elf will be escorted to the pier by the U.S. Coast Guard on one of its local rescue boats. The famous CG36500 rescue boat that Santa has hitched a ride on in the past has been retired. Once on shore, he’ll meet with kids and hand out candy canes before climbing aboard a fire truck and heading to the community center.
At the community center, Santa will meet with admirers and will have gifts for each child.
Everyone is invited to attend Santa’s arrival. Parking at the fish pier is likely to be full, so carpooling is advised.
Chatham continues its holiday celebration in two weeks. This year’s Christmas by the Sea tree lighting and holiday stroll will be held Friday, Dec. 13, beginning with the annual Children’s Light Parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at the community center. Santa, having recovered his land legs, will team up with the fire department to lead the march down Main Street to Sears Park, where carols will be sung by local school choirs and Scott Hamilton will recite “A Visit From St. Nicholas” (better known as “‘The Night Before Christmas”). The town Christmas tree will light up at approximately 6 p.m.
After the tree lighting, downtown shops will be open for strolling and holiday shopping and Santa will greet kids in the chamber of commerce information booth on Main Street. Free horse and carriage rides will leave from the town offices parking lot.
