ORLEANS – Preparations are underway at the Homeless Prevention Council (HPC) for the 2024 Adopt-a-Family Holiday Program. Thanks to the continued support of our generous community, the annual program has served more than 5,500 children over the past 29 years.
Community needs have grown every year since the program’s inception in 1995. Last year was HPC’s biggest year to date. Donors adopted 225 families and 472 kids, an almost 15 percent increase from 2023. HPC anticipates a growing need again this year. The steady increase in need also means that HPC is looking for more donors and families to match with hopeful children.
There are four ways to get involved:
Adopt-a-Family or child. HPC can match donors with a child or family to purchase clothing and wish list items (approximately $200 per child).
Donate to HPC’s Holiday Shoppers. These volunteers fill in the gaps by shopping for
unmatched children, making every effort to check off items on their wish list.
Donate to the HPC Adopt-a-Family Bike Fund. A bike and helmet for a child on our list can be provided for $150. HPC provided new bikes to 120 children last year.
Purchase a gift card for a teen, or a grocery gift card for a family in need as a special
enhancement to their holiday celebrations.
The last day that HPC can accept donation drop-offs is Dec. 4 at its office at 8 Main St. For more information, contact Adopt-a-Family Program chair Jenna Smith at 508-255-9667, extension 210, or email adoptafamily@hpcccapecod.org.
