HARWICH – When the Monomoy field hockey team needed a spark, Emery Cappallo delivered in the clutch.
The sophomore from Barnstable erased an early deficit with a game-tying goal in the third quarter before burying a penalty stroke with 8:46 remaining in overtime to lift second-seeded Monomoy to a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Cohasset in the Division 4 state quarterfinals Friday evening.
“My teammate Mia Zimmerman put in a lot of effort on that line, and our team has put in so much effort this whole season,” Cappallo said. “I knew that I had to get it in, and I had confidence in myself that I could.”
Zimmerman drew the decisive penalty after she absorbed a hard tackle from a Cohasset defender as she made a line for the Skippers’ net on a breakaway bid. Cappallo stepped in to shoot the penalty stroke and netted her second goal of the game to propel the Sharks back to the semifinals for a fourth straight year.
“I was so proud,” Cappallo said. “It was really a team effort. We’ve all put so much time into this, and that feeling felt so great because all of the effort we’ve put into this game and all season paid off.”
Cappallo and the Sharks will look to earn a second straight trip to the Division 4 state final with a victory against Sutton in Tuesday’s semifinal.
“We’re definitely trying to make it all the way,” the sophomore said. “We’re taking it one game at a time, but when we step out onto the field, every single person is leaving their heart out there.”
