HARWICH – Heading into the heart of fall, what could be more cozy than a night of live music? The 204, the town’s cultural center, will present singer Mozelle Andrulot on Nov. 2 for a night of musical indulgence celebrating the unveiling of the 204’s newly renovated auditorium.
Andrulot has been singing her whole life. Growing up on Cape Cod, her penchant for performance began in childhood and continued to grow during her time at Lesley University in Boston. After graduating, she pursued a full-time musical career in New York City and London before realizing the hustle and bustle of life in the music industry was not conducive to the life she wished to live, having always dreamed of a large family. So she moved back to the Cape, where she says she discovered the true meaning of balance.
Now, Andrulot is a dedicated mother to five children, an employee at PepsiCo, and still manages to perform regularly, never abandoning one passion for another.
“I really have to make an effort to make time [to perform,]” said Andrulot. “If I don’t make time for it, I feel it building, and I’m like ‘OK, you need to get out and perform.’”
Performing at community arts centers, musical celebrations, art galleries and more, Andrulot has been able to not only maintain her musical career but shape it into an ideal selection of gigs best suiting her particular musical proclivities.
“When I made the commitment for my music to continue, I was like ‘it can’t be loud bars, it has to be something you curate, that’s mellow and enjoyable,’” she said.
Andrulot’s performances are all about forming an intimate connection with her audience. The unique, mellow, intentional atmosphere she curates in each of her shows offers an opportunity for what Andrulot refers to as a “reciprocal moment.”
“It’s good for me, and it’s good for them, and everybody enjoys it and it just feels right; it’s like a reset,” she said. This intimacy with her audience heavily informs Androulot’s song choice. “I like the [songs] that make people feel. I can watch it happen; they close their eyes or they look at each other because it’s their song, or they just mouth the words back to me. It’s just such a nice moment to all be in there together.”
In her performance at the 204, audiences can expect covers of classic hits by beloved artists such as Billie Holiday, Eda Jane, Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, Erica Badeux and more. The selection of songs not only maximizes Andrulot’s depth and tone but embodies the energy of the fall season, creating a set list that she describes as cozy and warm.
The importance of the arts, not only in her personal life but in the community, is something that cannot be understated, Andrulot said. Not only is she able to pursue her passion, she can set an example for her children and all people who come see her perform.
“I think it’s really important for them to see that you can be a dynamic person,” she said. “You can really honor that person in you who needs to create.”
The need to honor the creative parts of ourselves and those around us is what makes institutions like the 204 of paramount importance. As Andrulot put it, “I think it’s wonderful when communities make a space for people to create. If you make it, they will come.”
Andrulot’s performance will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 2, following the 5:30 p.m. auditorium ribbon-cutting ceremony. Tickets are free. For more information, visit 204sisson.com.
