Arthur Dickinson slipped into an eternal sleep at the age of 81 on the morning of September 22, 2024. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Elaine, of 41 years, and two loving daughters: Elizabeth and Andrea (Joshua Gerenia), brother-in-law Rev. Joseph Towle, sister-in-law Mary MacDonald (Hugh) and many loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his five siblings: Clayton (Georgina), Helen Hermanson (Bob), Robert (Beverly), Margaret Jung (Ralph), and Charles (Mary), his parents, Ella and Clyde, his step-mother Winnie and brother-in-law Thomas Towle.
Arthur was born on September 2, 1943, in Brockton, MA to Ella (Lawson) and Clyde Dickinson. He attended Boston University and graduated in 1965 with a degree in French and Education. Arthur enrolled in Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI where he found success and was later invited to return to teach at the Naval War College. Arthur served in the US Navy on board the U.S.S. Weiss as a Damage Control Ship Engineer during the Vietnam War. He remained in the Navy Reserves, retiring as a Commander in 1989. Arthur was a foreign language teacher at South Weymouth High School. In the summer of 1995, the family moved away from Brockton and relocated to Harwich, beginning a new life as wash-ashore Cape Codders after having spent many happy summers vacationing in Dennisport.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, The Family Pantry of Cape Cod or the VFW.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 26th from 4-6 pm at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 678 Main St. Harwich Center. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 27th at 10 am at Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main St. Brewster, MA.
