Barbara Elisabeth Knapp
It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness we announce the passing of Barbara Elisabeth Knapp of Eastham on July 14, 2024 at 71 years old after a long and courageous 18 year battle with cancer.
Barbara was born June 14, 1953 in Westfield, MA, the daughter of Elinore (Lenihan) and Harry Knapp. She grew up in Westfield and summered in Eastham with her family, working at The Pizza Barn. After graduating high school, Barbara attended Green Mountain College for 2 years and transferred to Wheaton College, graduating magna cum laude with a BA in psychology in 1975. After college, she met Joseph Carreiro during a night of dancing at Piggy’s in Provincetown. She moved to Cape Cod full time and they married in 1976. During their 20-year marriage, they lived in Provincetown, raised their daughter Amanda, and Barbara worked at Cape Cod Five in Wellfleet. Over her 42-year career at the bank, she moved up the ranks to become vice president and the mortgage loan officer for the lower Cape, while developing friendships with both colleagues and clients alike.
In her spare time, Barbara loved spending time with family and friends, especially her 2 grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. Her friendships and relationships meant the world to her. She enjoyed the beach, traveling, the theatre, music, and church. She was an avid animal lover and had many 4-legged companions during her life. She also loved to give back to her community and donated her time to many local organizations.
Barbara showed incredible strength, resilience, courage and hope, even on her most difficult days. She fought with everything she had and left “no stone unturned,” as she would say. She was incredibly grateful to her expansive team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for providing her extraordinary care.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Amanda (Carreiro) White and her husband Robbie of Norwell, MA, her grandchildren Declan and Kennedy White of Norwell, MA, her sister Judith (Knapp) Crocker and her husband Richard of Burlington, VT, her nephew Benjamin Crocker and his wife Susan of Springfield, MO, her stepdaughter Jodi (Carreiro) Burns and her husband Charlie of Port St Lucie, FL and her stepson Justin Carreiro of Port St Lucie, FL. She is also survived by many friends who she considered family, and she left behind her loving dog Chance.
