Chatham Sisters Make History By Winning 63rd Day Sailer North American Championship

PLEASANT BAY – History was made during the 63rd edition of the Day Sailer North American Championship.

Natalie Coleman-Fuller and Allison Coleman, sisters from Chatham, became the first all-women team to win the Day Sailer North American title on July 27 at Pleasant Bay. The sister duo won the final race to finish with 40 points, leading the championship fleet of 23 points to secure the championship crown.

Craig Lee and Mary Niederberger of El Dorado Hills, Calif. took second in the championship fleet, while Drew and Zoe Carlson of Chatham finished third in the fleet, which sailed 12 races.

In the presidential fleet, Wayne Hastings of Eastham and Lydia Hopkins of East Orleans secured the title, while Orleans residents Sid Snow, Andi Hibbert, Mary Sophia Smith and Katie Snow finished as the runner-up. Joy Sheets and Rob Powers of Dunedin, Fla. rounded out the top three in the presidential fleet, which featured five boats and 12 races.

Cody Lamoreux and his mother, Barb Shipley, both of Chatham, took first in the juniors fleet, followed by North Chatham residents Mary and Brian Bush as the runner-up. Morgan Whitlock and Matt White of Annapolis, Md. rounded out the top three for the juniors, which had eight boats and five races.

CYC Regatta

The nation’s oldest and longest-running free regatta returned Aug. 3-4 as the Chatham Yacht Club held its 103rd annual regatta amid strong southwest winds that served as a challenge for the 136 boats that competed.

Ryan and Katelyn McGauley of Chatham Yacht Club captured the 420s division title, Neal Drake and Ryan Thompson from Pleasant Bay Community Boating took the Flying Scots title, and Tony and Ari Roth from Chatham Yacht Club were crowned BayBird champions.

Ted and Melissa Dickson from Chatham Yacht Club earned the Beetle Cat title, Allison Coleman and Natalie Coleman-Fuller, sisters from Chatham Yacht Club, won the C-14 championship, and Harrison Kintz (Chatham Yacht Club) secured the Laser title.

In the Sandpiper class, Peter and Julia Grumbling of Pleasant Bay Community Boating earned the title, while Summer and Margaret Graupe (Chatham Yacht Club) won the Junior Sunfish championship.

Other champions included Chatham Yacht Club member Sam Benson (Open Sunfish); Grace Fougere from Stage Harbor Yacht Club (Opti Green); Lucas Proia from Chatham Yacht Club (Opti Championship); Roque Coelho from Chatham Yacht Club (Opti Red); Lucas Proia (Opti Blue); and Rylen Saletta from Pleasant Bay Community Boating (Opti White).
