Coast Guard Auxiliary Demonstrates Distress Signals

CHATHAM – The local flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary held an impromptu class on the use of distress flares last week, drawing a small crowd of curious beachgoers.

Gathered at Lighthouse Beach, the volunteers demonstrated the use of handheld flares, smoke signals and parachute flares, all tools to summon help in the event of an emergency at sea. It was also an opportunity to make good use of expired flares that would otherwise need to be destroyed.
