Working so closely with realtors in my ad sales position at The Chronicle and hitting detour after detour on Cape roads during the last decade, I thought I had heard everything about septic tanks, Title 5 and town sewer hookups. But that was before I met Tim DeLude and the Sludgehammer!

Delude started his company Shore Things Environmental a year ago after working with his family’s business, Nauset Disposal.

“I stayed and helped through the transfer of ownership after the sale but then I thought what the heck am I gonna do now? I know how to run a trash company really well but this company kind of stems from my love of the water. If you live on the Cape, we need to talk about water quality.” Delude knew that homeowners are learning about sewer hookups and responsible septic tank management.

“So I thought, how can we get the biggest impact for the least amount of impact financially on homeowners, instead of having a handful of people have to convert over to these very expensive sewer systems? Why isn’t there another way? I started to think about all these houses around ponds. I live on Sand Pond in Harwich. It’s one of the ponds that I can’t take my kids swimming to right now. There’s an algae bloom there, and there aren’t that many houses around it, but what if there’s an economic way of creating a bigger impact right away?” Delude said.

“So we started looking at these Sludgehammer units. It was originally designed as remediation technology, which in itself is amazing. You have your existing Title 5 septic system and what happens over time is that everything goes into your tank; the solids settle down to the bottom and then the fluids work their way to the distributor box and then leach down into the ground where basically there’s a natural filter of sand, stone, etc., but sometimes there’s a biomass creating a slimy layer in your leaching field which is kind of a blocker that over time that will cause septic tanks to fail. And of course that is not good for the environment.

“So I said, obviously you need to get rid of that slimy layer, right? And is that why we get tanks pumped every two to three years?

“So that’s what the Sludgehammer was designed for, to biologically convert your septic tank into an aerobic environment as opposed to an anaerobic environment (which means when you close up your tank, there’s no oxygen in there). The introduction of the Sludgehammer rejuvenates your septic tank.” Delude installed one at his house and he showed me photographs of the results, a cleaner septic tank with the Sludgehammer in just a couple months.

“I’m totally geeking out on you right now,” he laughed. “But it’s really so exciting how quickly it made a difference. And there’s so much more to learn about the benefits. We feel so confident in these that we guarantee them. If for some reason you do not get the same results, we will buy back the unit and put it towards the cost of replacing the system.”

Along with introducing people to the Sludghammer, they pump existing septic tanks, install tanks for new construction or replace tanks, consult on wastewater management which includes drain cleaning, grease trap cleaning, and septic repair and maintenance. “Our team has the equipment and experience to get the job done right the first time,” he said.
