BOURNE – A month ago, Oregon State catcher Wilson Weber was across the country wondering whether he would have an opportunity to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer.

Not only did Weber get the chance to fulfill his wish, he also will leave the Cape with some new hardware.

Weber was named the Cape League Playoffs Most Valuable Player on Monday night after he capped off an impactful postseason by going 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored during Harwich’s title-clinching 4-3 victory over Bourne.

“It’s such a blessing to even make it up here because I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to,” Weber said. “[Winning MVP] is a blessing, too. It’s pretty cool. But in reality, I’m not going to remember getting this bat in maybe even a year. I think the memories are going to be meeting all of these lifelong friends. Even the guys I lived with in the house for three weeks — it feels like I've known them for two years.”

Although the Cape League is regarded as amateur baseball’s premier showcase league for players to make their mark in front of Major League scouts, Weber said it was clear that the Mariners were more focused on winning than achieving and receiving individual goals and accolades.

“One thing we did at the end was start making sacrifices,” he said. “We weren’t like, ‘Oh, I’m trying to hit a homer to help my stats.’ It was, ‘It’s time to go out here and win.’ I think we did a really good job of going up there and having quality at-bats and getting knocks when we need to and keeping it simple.

“I think that’s the biggest change we made as a team that a lot of teams might not have got to.”

Although his time in Harwich was brief, Weber will be remembered for making an immediate impact that helped this year’s Mariners team achieve the ultimate prize: a Cape League title.
