First Youth Police Academy Held In Chatham

by Staff Reports

Thirteen sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from the Monomoy School District participated in the first Chatham Police Youth Academy July 20 to Aug. 2. During the sessions, held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, the young recruits had a visit from the Cape Cod SWAT team, participated in excursions to the Chatham Airport and Chatham Fire Department (where they received CPR training) and took part in physical fitness activities. The Academy was under the direction of Sgt. Bill Massey, with Officer Liz Thompson serving as assistant director. They received assistance from Deputy Chief Lou Malzone, Sgt. Sarah Harris and Officers Cassie Wentzell and Clint Collier. Chief Michael Anderson said he was pleased with the results from the inaugural session, and Massey said he anticipates the Academy returning next summer. Watch for announcements in the spring on the department’s social media.
