HARWICH – These are trying times for the Harwich Mariners.

Although the Mariners have lost five straight and 14 of their last 15 games, the past couple of weeks haven’t been all bad for the club.

Cam Maldonado, a right-handed hitter from Northeastern University, has been among the bright spots for Harwich this summer.

The 6-foot-3 outfielder from Wolcott, Conn. leads the team in multiple hitting categories, including hits (25), batting average (.284), runs batted in (17), runs scored (16) and slugging percentage (.456). Maldonado also ranks second in the team in home runs (4) and on-base percentage (.388).

The Northeastern Husky was recently named an East Division All-Star after leading Harwich with a team-best six hits last week. He went 2-for-5 in Sunday’s 5-4 loss to Orleans, finishing with a run scored and a solo home run that gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Maldonado’s success comes after .265 in 48 games at Northeastern this spring.
