Our View: When You Can’t Read The Fine Print

by The Cape Cod Chronicle

Every month, a few people call to cancel their subscriptions to The Chronicle for a sad reason: they’re no longer able to see well enough to read it. And for people with visual impairments or physical limitations that make reading difficult, losing access to the local paper can be socially isolating.

We’re working to eventually equip our website with features that will help people with impaired vision, but we want to make sure our subscribers know about an amazing service provided by volunteers working through a local nonprofit. It’s called Audible Local Ledger (www.AudibleLocalLedger.org), and it’s based in Falmouth. For years, their volunteers have been recording themselves reading the pages of The Chronicle and other local newspapers for broadcast to people in the community. They provide special radios that can receive the over-the-air programming, and their website has recorded access to many of their programs.

If you know of someone who has trouble reading the paper, please pass on the news about Audible Local Ledger. The phone number is 508-539-2030. Consider volunteering or making a donation to keep the news coming for people who can no longer read the fine print.
