Athlete Of The Week: Tommy Barth
Tommy Barth’s first home run of the summer couldn’t have come at a better time.
The outfielder from East Tennessee State delivered in a big way for the Harwich Mariners, launching his first blast of the season with the bases loaded at Brewster on July 3. The grand slam gave the Mariners a 10-2 lead and helped the team pull away for a 13-2 mercy-rule win over the Whitecaps.
“I was happy for him to get that one,” Harwich manager Steve Englert said. “His family is here.”
Barth has been a fixture in Harwich’s outfield and an impact hitter at the plate, hitting .293 with seven RBIs in 12 games. Englert described him as “a grinder.”
“He plays hard every day and there’s a trust factor — every time I put his name in the lineup, I know what I’m going to get out of him,” Englert said. “He goes out there and puts his nose down and competes. He’s a great kid and a great teammate.”
